Stone Polymer Composite (SPC) flooring has become the dominant choice for wet areas and high-traffic spaces across the UK. Here's everything you need to know about specifying, installing and selling SPC to clients.
What Is SPC Flooring?
SPC flooring is a rigid core luxury vinyl tile (LVT) with a stone polymer composite core. Unlike traditional LVT, which has a flexible core, SPC has a rigid, dimensionally stable core that makes it:
- **100% waterproof** — suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and wet rooms
- **Dimensionally stable** — minimal expansion and contraction with temperature changes
- **Suitable for underfloor heating** — compatible with both electric and water-based systems
- **Highly durable** — resistant to dents, scratches, and heavy foot traffic
SPC vs LVT vs Laminate
| Feature | SPC | LVT | Laminate |
|---------|-----|-----|----------|
| Waterproof | 100% | Mostly | No |
| UFH compatible | Yes | Yes | Limited |
| Rigid core | Yes | No | Yes |
| Suitable for wet areas | Yes | Limited | No |
For bathrooms and kitchens, SPC is the clear specification choice.
Key Specification Criteria
### Wear Layer Thickness
The wear layer is the transparent protective coating on top of the decorative layer. Thicker wear layers = greater durability.
- **0.3mm (12 mil)**: Light residential use
- **0.5mm (20 mil)**: Standard residential — our recommended minimum
- **0.7mm+ (28 mil+)**: Heavy residential and light commercial
### Overall Thickness
SPC flooring typically ranges from 4mm to 8mm. Thicker boards feel more substantial underfoot and provide better sound insulation. 5–6mm is the most common specification for residential projects.
### Underlay
Many SPC boards come with a pre-attached underlay (typically IXPE foam). This simplifies installation and provides additional sound insulation. Check whether your chosen board includes pre-attached underlay before ordering separate underlay.
Installation
SPC flooring uses a click-lock installation system — no adhesive required for floating installations. Key installation points:
- Acclimatise boards for 24–48 hours before installation
- Ensure the subfloor is flat (within 3mm over 1.8m)
- Maintain a 10mm expansion gap around the perimeter
- For underfloor heating, ensure the system is at operating temperature for 7 days before installation, then turned off 24 hours before fitting
