Composite Decking: A UK Buyer's Guide for 2026

Composite decking has become the go-to choice for UK garden projects — but not all composite boards are equal. Here's what to look for, what to avoid, and how to get the best value for your clients.

What Is Composite Decking?

Composite decking is manufactured from a blend of wood fibre and recycled plastic, typically with a protective polymer capping layer. The result is a decking board that looks like timber but requires a fraction of the maintenance.

Key Buying Criteria

### 1. Capping Type

**Uncapped composite** boards have exposed wood fibre on all sides. They're cheaper but more susceptible to moisture absorption, staining, and fading.

**Three-sided capped** boards have a protective polymer layer on three sides. Better moisture resistance than uncapped, but the exposed underside can still absorb moisture.

**Four-sided (fully capped)** boards are encased in polymer on all four sides. This is the premium option — maximum moisture resistance, stain resistance, and colour stability. We recommend fully capped boards for UK climates.

### 2. Board Profile

**Solid boards** are heavier and more rigid. They feel more substantial underfoot and are better suited to commercial applications.

**Hollow boards** are lighter and easier to handle. Modern hollow boards with internal ribbing are structurally sound for residential use and are the most common specification.

### 3. Surface Texture

Look for boards with a realistic wood-grain texture and a slip-resistant surface. In the UK, where decking is frequently wet, slip resistance is a safety requirement, not just a preference.

### 4. Colour Stability

Cheaper composite boards can fade significantly in UV light. Look for boards with UV stabilisers in the capping layer and check manufacturer warranties for colour stability.

### 5. Warranty

Reputable composite decking manufacturers offer 10–25 year warranties. Be cautious of products with warranties shorter than 10 years.

Installation Considerations

Composite decking requires a proper subframe — typically treated timber joists or aluminium framing. Boards must be installed with the correct gap between boards (typically 5–8mm) to allow for thermal expansion and drainage.

Hidden fixing systems give a cleaner finish and are worth specifying for premium projects.
