PVC Wall Panels vs Tiles: Which Is Better for Your Bathroom?

Tiles have been the default bathroom wall covering for decades. But PVC wall panels are rapidly gaining ground — and for good reason. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose the right option for your project.

Installation Time

Tiles require surface preparation, adhesive application, grouting, and sealing — a process that typically takes 2–3 days for a standard bathroom. PVC panels can be installed directly over existing tiles or plasterboard using grab adhesive, often completing the same job in a single day.

For trade professionals working to tight schedules, the time saving is significant.

Maintenance

Grout lines are the Achilles heel of tiled bathrooms. They discolour, harbour mould, and require regular cleaning and periodic resealing. PVC panels have no grout lines — the surface is seamless and wipes clean in seconds.

For rental properties and social housing, this is a compelling advantage. Reduced maintenance means reduced callbacks and lower long-term costs.

Cost

Material costs for PVC panels are generally lower than equivalent quality tiles. When you factor in the reduced labour time, the total installed cost of a panelled bathroom is typically 30–40% lower than a tiled equivalent.

Durability

Quality PVC panels are 100% waterproof, impact-resistant, and will not crack or chip under normal use. Tiles, while durable, are vulnerable to cracking from impact and substrate movement — particularly in older properties.

Aesthetics

This is where tiles traditionally held the advantage — but the gap has narrowed considerably. Modern PVC panels are available in convincing stone, marble, and tile-effect finishes that are difficult to distinguish from the real thing at normal viewing distances.

For high-end residential projects where authenticity matters, natural stone or large-format porcelain tiles may still be the preferred specification. For the majority of bathroom renovation projects, PVC panels offer an excellent aesthetic at a fraction of the cost and installation time.

Our Verdict

For most bathroom renovation projects — particularly in rental properties, social housing, and mid-market residential — PVC wall panels offer a compelling combination of speed, cost, durability, and low maintenance.

For premium residential projects where budget allows and authenticity is paramount, tiles remain a strong choice.

The good news: you don't have to choose one or the other. Many of our trade customers combine PVC panels for shower areas and wet walls with tiles for feature walls and flooring — getting the best of both.
